CEDAR FALLS — A brand new program is giving sixth grade students a week full of experiences in the outdoors at Hartman Reserve Nature Center. Hansen Elementary School kicked off the School of the Wild last week as part of the Cedar Falls Community Schools' new lessons for the sixth grade class and a statewide initiative of the University of Iowa to increase outdoor learning experiences for elementary and middle school students. Hansen Elementary School sixth-grade teacher Jeremy Swanson teaches his students how to start a fire with a ferrocerium rod on Friday during the "School of the Wild" program at Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Cedar Falls.
